If you grew up
in the 80s, you either had a Members Only jacket or you were a complete
and total fashion outcast. Members Only jackets were the staple of 80s
fashion outerwear and everyone who was anyone owned one.
While the Members Only brand included other clothing and different styles of jackets, when someone refers to Members Only jackets, they’re usually referring to the cotton/poly jackets with the nylon lining. These Members Only jackets featured an elasticized waist, elasticized wrists and a zip-up front that had a couple of snaps at the neck. Why they were so popular no one knows, but there’s no denying the fact that almost everyone wanted a Members Only jacket.
Today Members Only jackets are both loved
and hated. While some people are opting to wear vintage Members Only
jackets for their nostalgic
value,
others are quick to ridicule the brand and the people who wear it. Just
watch the movie Shallow Hal and see Gwyneth Paltrow ask Jason
Alexander if he’s the last member of the club when she sees him wearing a
Members Only Jacket.
Perhaps now that 80s fashion seems to be making a comeback, Members Only Jackets will once again have a place in the fashion world. After all, when you put it on, something is bound to happen.
