80s Picture Day Costume Idea

Picture this: you get invited to an 80s party, and you need to come up with the perfect costume.

Of course there will be the usual suspects in attendance: your Cyndi Laupers, your Madonnas, a few guys walking around in tiny shorts and “choose life” t-shirts, and maybe even a Beetlejuice or Duckie Dale. But what if you want a costume that is a little quirkier? Funny. Subtle. Dare I say . . . brilliant?

80s Picture Day Costume Idea

Why go with the expected when you can be an 80s picture day portrait, complete with the laser background that we all have somewhere in our box of school pics from the 80s?

Back in the 80s everyone wanted this rad background for their school photos. A little bit neon, a little bit laser, a little bit “Tron” and a whole lot of awesome. And, by including both pink and blue, it was perfect for both boys and girls.

This homage to the senior portrait is oh so easy to assemble!

All you will need is:

  • A large square of cardboard/foam core board
  • The laser-background image printed on a large scale
  • Ribbon to affix armholes to your background so you can wear it
  • Your favorite totally awesome 1980s outfit

Simply cover the cardboard or foam core with the background and glue it down. Poke holes in board and string through ribbon so you can wear your background like a backpack.

As far as your outfit goes, think of what you’d choose to wear on your big picture day. Will you go with your oversized pink Forenza sweater or pop the collar on that turquoise Polo shirt you’ve been saving for a special occasion? The possibilities are truly endless . . .

So be the hit of the party in this picture-perfect costume!

But be prepared — everyone will want to try it on and take a picture of themselves, taking a nostalgic blast into the past with this futuristic piece of 80s awesomeness.
