80s Party Planning Story: Pac-Man Cake

We LOVE to receive great 80s party stories like this one. Thanks so much, Heather for sharing your Pac-Man cake ideas and picture. We are sure other visitors can get some great ideas when planning their own 80s party from what Heather did. My 7 year old wanted a Pac-Man cake so I thought I would try it from memory. I used 1 round cake pan that was an inch deep and then used a rectangular pan for the ghosts. It took only 1 cake mix for me but you may want two if you do not want short cakes. Once baked and cooled, I flipped the cakes out and carved a mouth out Pac-Man’s mouth from the round cake. Then for the rectangular cake I divided in fours and then carved the ghosts by hand. Round on the top of the ghosts and jagged on the bottom. Once done I took two store bought frostings (ours was cream cheese) and started making the frostings. I used food coloring to color each frosting to match what I thought Pac-Man and the ghosts should look like. Once all the cakes were frosted, I used a edible gel frosting to outline the Pac-Man and ghosts to make them look more authentic. For the eyes on the ghost, I split white malted milk candies and on top of those a dot of gel to hold on a chocolate chip. And for Pac-Man, we used a chocolate covered malted milk ball for his eye. –...

Turning 80s Cassette Tapes and Vinyl Records into Totally Awesome Decor

By Stacey Iden Don’t know what to do with all those old cassette tapes and vinyl records you have stored away collecting dust? Now that all your old favorite songs from the 80s are probably happily filling your MP3 player, what should you do with all your hard-to-let-go music media memorabilia? Break the Record knows exactly what to do with it to “keep the music alive.” Break the Record transforms previously-loved vinyl records and cassette tapes into functional and decorative household items, including clocks, bowls and lighted center pieces (a particularly awesome choice as a centerpiece to your 80s party decorations). Vinyl Records Ideas Vinyl records and cassette tapes are both made of materials that will never biodegrade if they are thrown away and sent to a landfill as their final resting place. Wouldn’t you rather see your favorite record album hanging in your living room or office as a totally rad retro vinyl record clock? Pick up a clock movement at your local craft store and pop it into that old favorite record and hang it on your wall so you can admire it everyday and reminisce of the good ole days when you went to your favorite little record shop and flipped through to find the perfect new album. Other ideas include vinyl record bowls to hold keys, remotes, jewelry, snacks and whatever else you may need to throw in there. Just place vinyl record into oven and heat at 200 degrees for approx. 5 minutes, remove with oven mitts and then press into a glass or ceramic bowl to shape by hand. Cassette Tape Ideas And for those old cassette tapes packed away in the attic or top of your closet, how about a pencil holder for your office? Just glue four of your favorite old tapes together, attach a cardboard bottom, and now your pens and pencils will be happy to rest in their new home surrounded by great music from the 80s. And the most recent item at Break The Record is the Cassette Tape Night Light. Eight or more cassette tapes and one CD are handcrafted together along with LED lights into a “totally 80s” lamp which can be used as a night light, a decorative lamp, or a super fun 80s party centerpiece. This and other great ideas can be found at...

80s Party Planning Story: Using 80s Items as Decorations

We LOVE to receive great 80s party stories like this one. Thanks so much, Anita for sharing your ideas and pictures. We are sure other visitors can get some great ideas when planning their own 80s party from what Anita did. Hello Like Totally 80s, I want to thank you for your great website. I spent the last 2 months planning an 80s party and your website was full of great information. Through all my planning, I searched your site over and over. The party was a great success as everyone really got into it. We even had ‘The Blues Brothers’ show up. I thought I would share with you some of what I did so that maybe my hard work could be shared with others. First off, I am quite proud of myself for throwing this party for as little money as I did. I went through my closets and luckily I had saved things which helped to set the mood. I had my old albums, 45s, cassette tapes and VHS tapes. I also had old cell phones, walkmans and such which we used as centerpieces along with wayfarer sunglasses and mini rubik’s cubes. I bought the sunglasses at amazon.com and the rubik’s cubes at a local dollar store. I also bought all my paper products from the local dollar store and friends helped by bringing dishes to pass. I made posters for each year. Each poster had major national and world events for that year along with the movies, TV shows and songs we were watching and listening to. I used black, neon pink and neon green for my color scheme, transferring my basement back in time. Down the stairwell to the basement I used post-it notes (invented in the 80s) with the popular sayings of the decade, ex. awesome, rad, gnarly, etc. and a large sign that said “Save Ferris.” Also, I used old computer diskettes as coasters. I taped a neon green or pink post-it on each diskette. I then made clear labels with popular quotes from movies, TV shows etc and placed them on the diskette. In the invitation, I asked everyone to send me a picture of them taken in the 1980s and the high school they attended. I had two groups of guests who did not know each other so I made name tags. This was a great ice breaker. We also have a projector/ large screen TV so I hooked up my computer to the projector. As everyone was arriving, I had a slide show of their pictures while the 80s music was playing. After everyone arrived I officially opened the...

80s Party Decorations Stories: Creating an Awesome 80s Atmosphere

We LOVE to receive great 80s party stories like this one. Thanks so much, Maria, for sharing your ideas and pictures. We are sure other visitors can get some great ideas when planning their own 80s party from what Maria did. I need to thank you for your AWESOME website! You proved to be an invaluable resource for me when I threw my party in August 2008. First off, as far as decorating goes, I scoured various websites for 80’s posters. I also asked friends to dig up any records and memorabilia. As you can see from the pictures, they did not disappoint! I found a working record player in my in-laws attic, and set that up in my den along with all of the LP’s that were found. Guests brought any pics of themselves in the 80’s that I posted on an easel as well as high school yearbooks. I had on hand Transformers, Kabangers, Chucky dolls, Care Bears, you name it! Of course Aqua Net and Aussie Sprunch Spray was in the powder room for the girls. Food and snacks were cheeseballs, Razzles, Fun Dip, and Reeses Pieces. My costume was a combination of Mandee and Claire’s for accessories. My husband was ICEMAN from Top Gun. Many guests had luck with vintage shops and their own ingenuity. We set up a TV outside so that guests could watch their favorite 80’s movies, Sixteen Candles, St. Elmo’s Fire, The Breakfast Club, etc. Oh, THE MUSIC. I am a fan of ALL 80’s music, so my iPod playlist had everything from The Police to R.E.M. to Metallica. Can’t wait for this year’s party! Keep up the good work! Maria – Kings Park, NY...

80s Party Decorations: Corrina Shares Her Ideas

We LOVE to receive great 80s party stories like this one. Thanks so much, Corrina, for sharing your ideas and pictures. The Rubik’s Cube cake is awesome! We are sure other visitors can get some great ideas when planning their own 80s party from what Corrina did. Your site was part of my inspiration and I wanted to share the results of the 80s party I threw August , 2008. Here are some party ideas for future viewers. Decorations I got crazy colored decorations of various sizes and shapes, disco balls, mini rubix cube key chains, and a strobe light from Oriental trading company. 4 dozen balloons of bright bold colors and cans of Aquanet (one on the counter, one in the bathroom, and one outside just in case someone needed an extra spritz before the pictures). 80s plates are almost impossible so I found some that said Happy Birthday . . . Again – but any general birthday plates with bright colors would work. I got neon colored plastic cups, plates, napkins, table cloths, and forks from the DollarTree (it doesn’t have to be expensive to be fun). I hit the vintage stores and found 45s of 80s music, I scored a Madonna’s Holiday record, Rick Springfield’s Jessie’s Girl and Mickey to name a few. Only a buck and worth it the guests loved the ideas. Tie some curling ribbon threw the centers and hang them all around. I printed out some pics from the 80s (movie stars, shows, cartoons, toys, and bands) and glued them to neon colored poster boards with 80s trivia (see pic below). Cake & Food Our menu included snacks (chips & dip, veggies, sub sandwich) and original 80s drinks (i.e. Tab, RC, Shasta). The cake, I made it to look like a Rubik’s Cube (see pic below). Not easy that is for sure, but it stood out. Just google Rubik’s Cube cake and one site with a “how to” gives step by step instructions. Another idea for the cake is a Car shape for Nightrider, A record of your favorite 80s artist, a can of aquanet. Invitations I used the Totally Awesome 80s invite from your website and personalized it to fit our party. Make sure the invites tell the guests to participate in the theme. I asked my guests to: Dress to Impress: Whether you were the Jock, the Geek, the Basket Case, the Princess or the Criminal – it’s time to break out your jellies, biker shorts, leggings, over sized sweaters, Hypercolor t-shirts, Don Johnson coats, and the aqua net – We’re gonna relive the 80’s! Costumes The 80s are alive...

80s Party Decorations Stories: Pulling It All Together 80s Style

We LOVE to receive great 80s party stories like this one. Thanks so much, Ben, for sharing your ideas and pictures. We are sure other visitors can get some great ideas when planning their own 80s party from what Ben did. First off I want to say that you guys have an awesome site and that I believe it is one that is desperately needed for people who love the 80’s. I stumbled onto your site while planning for an 80’s party of my own which I was throwing for some simple fun with friends. I had an idea of what I wanted but it wasn’t until I hit your site that I was able to put everything together. I took the idea of hanging some of our favorite 80’s move posters as decoration. I used neon colors as much as possible and tried to get as many plates and napkins that were related to the 80’s as well; I scored in a Party City store with plates from My Little Pony and Napkins from Care Bears, Transformers (the old cartoon style) and Strawberry Shortcake. I was also able to find at the party store party favors like mini Magic 8-balls, Super Mario little games, Jelly bracelets, My Little Mini Packs and a few other small things. For food we stuck to the 80’s as much as possible . . . Ring Pops, Push Pops, Pixi Sticks, Twix, Crush Orange Soda, Capri Sun, Big League Chew, Bubble Tape, Nutter Butter, Fig Newtons and for hot food Chicken McNuggets and Pizza. We also had the basic alcohol as well as Wine Coolers. The party was a blast and I just wanted to share a few images with you from it. Enjoy and Thank you again! Thanks, Ben...

80s Party Decorations Stories: Before & After

We LOVE to receive great 80s party stories like this one. Thanks so much, Michael, for sharing your ideas and pictures. We are sure other visitors can get some great ideas when planning their own 80s party from what Michael did. First off I wanted to thank you for creating your site. It has giving me plenty of ideas. My girlfriend had her 28th birthday coming up and I wanted to do something completely different for her and our friends. So I had an idea to throw an 80’s party. My vision of a success for this party was a complete transformation of my girlfriends basement which was over 1000 square feet to the ultimate 80’s club. I’ve spent over $400.00 on party supplies. Check out the Before and after pictures (see below). Everyone that entered the basement had their eyes go wide and mouths dropped on how the room came out. We had 40 guests and 27 were dressed up. I’ve provided several pictures. My biggest task was how to come up with a temporary solution to cover up mocha color walls and brown leather couches. I had to come up with some innovative ideas. For $35.00 dollars I bought table cover rolls (Black and purple) to cover up the walls. I’ve used a puddy tape that would make it stick the walls without ruining the paint. I’ve bought a couple of vintage posters from a flea market for $40.00. I’ve spent another $125 on photo ink and photo paper to print out all of the mini 8 by 11 movie posters that you see around the room. It cost $20.00 for the zebra sheets that covered up the couches. I bought off craigslist for $25 dollars a bunch of 80’s LP’s and I’ve used the puddy on sections of the wall that I’ve kept the original color and had the record and record cover on the walls. All of the high hats were replaced with either strobe light bulbs, black light bulbs, blue and red light bulbs. I had rope lights along the floor of the walls. I’ve also had a disco ball and black light that I used by the music area. I’ve also bought a bunch of 80’s CD’s for about 10 hours worth of music. The party was amazing. Its been a few months since it has passed and people are still talking about how great it was. We might make this an annual event since everything was able to come down very easily and none of the posters were ripped or ruined. Thanks, Michael Before . . . After . . ....

For example, you can put that box (or two) of old cassette tapes to a good use. Not only does it make a great a period-piece, but serves as a musical treat for the eyes. Accent with carnations and baby’s breath (just like those junior high school corsages) and your table will be magically transported back to 1980-whatever. Other great ideas for table decorations include using vintage lunchboxes as bowls to hold candies and favors and vintage 80s toys. See the photo below for how one 80s party thrower used a Star Wars AT-AT Walker and lunchbox on his 80s table. The same could be done with any...

Find Music & Games for an 80s Party

80s Party Songs Your best bet for a well rounded and totally gnarly 80s party mix is to get one of the very good 80s box sets that are available now. Like Totally 80s owns and can recommend whole-heartedly the Like, Omigod! (shown in the middle below) set put out by Rhino Records and the 80s Box series. We have included these great 80s music compilations below to purchase. If you have satellite radio, all you need to do is just tune into an 80s station, the 80s on 8, (commercial-free) and kick it. If that is not an option, you can also do one of the following things to get your 80s party songs lined up and ready to Fight For Your Right . . . to Par-tay. Make several mix CDs from stuff in your collection, CDs borrowed from friends, and songs gotten from iTunes to fill in the gaps. You’ll want to have enough to have 4-5 hours of play time. Download 80s iMixes and create an 80s playlist for your iPod. Set up a Pandora 80s station and party like it’s 1999. Find a Spotify 80s mix and bust an 80s move. Be sure to check our our Best 80s Songs Lists for some inspiration in compiling your playlist. Live 80s Music – For the Ultimate 80s Party If you are throwing a party or fundraiser event, why not have live music. View our list of rad 80s cover bands who would be perfect for your next 80s extravaganza. 80s Party Games Our favorite 80s party game is Pin the Glove on Michael. You will need a Michael Jackson poster; these can be had off of ebay for between $6.00-$20.00. This 80s party game does require a little creativity to create the sequined glove for pinning, but the result is worth the work. We recommend cutting out a glove from a sheet of poster board and then gluing silver sequins or glitter all over it. 80s trivia games are a great way to kick off an 80s party. Trivial Pursuit now has an 80s edition and it is perfect for a group game. You can divide into teams and duke it out 80s style. Buy the game here: Trivial Pursuit: Totally 80s. You can also buy the I Love the 80s board game developed by VH1. Be sure to have some great 80s-themed prizes on hand for the winners.
